How to unblock a drain
3 Easy ways using household items
This article explains 3 simple methods you can use to unblock a drain. Plunger, coat hanger and the natural drain cleaner methods.
Plunger
A simple rubber plunger uses a combination of water pressure and suction to clear minor obstructions. Run some water into the sink and use a rag to block any other openings. Place the rubber cup tightly around the plug hole, then push and pull the plunger handle vigorously a few times.
Wire coat hanger
This works well if you suspect that hair is clogging the drain in the shower or bathroom. Use pliers to ‘unbend’ the coat hanger into one long piece of wire and then create a small hook at one end. Remove the drain cover and push the wire down the drain, rotating it slowly. Now pull it out gently and hair and muck should be attached to the hook. Repeat as necessary.
Natural drain cleaner
This natural remedy requires baking soda, vinegar and hot water. With the sink dry, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain. Add two cups of boiling water and wait a few minutes. Now add another cup of baking soda and follow that with a cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain and expect bubbling and sizzling. Once this has subsided, add another two cups of hot water.
Hey presto! You drain should be clear.
